How to use a VPN without complicated setup

A practical guide to installing Zaylo, signing in to your account, connecting to a location, and checking your VPN status.

Guide

The short version.

A practical guide to installing Zaylo, signing in to your account, connecting to a location, and checking your VPN status.

Start with the right app#

The first step is choosing an app that actually exists for your device. Zaylo is available on Android today. iOS, macOS, and Windows are listed as coming soon so users do not waste time looking for installers that are not ready.

If you are using Android, start from the [Android app page](/apps?platform=android), review the download details, and download the official APK when it is available. If your device warns you about installing an APK, read the prompt carefully and only continue if you meant to install Zaylo.

  • Use the Android page for the current app path.
  • Do not download Zaylo installers from random mirrors.
  • Check the version, build date, and SHA-256 information when available.
Using Android? You can download the current official APK directly from our Apps download page. Other platforms will be added there as they launch.

Sign in to your account#

Account sign-in connects your plan, your account, and your device. Use the same email tied to checkout or pilot access, then enter the short code sent to that inbox.

If sign-in fails, first check for extra spaces, copied punctuation, or an expired code. If you just completed checkout, wait a moment for account provisioning and refresh the [dashboard](/account) before contacting support with the receipt email.

  • Use the same email tied to checkout or pilot access.
  • Use the newest sign-in code from your inbox.
  • Keep sign-in details private and request a fresh code when needed.

Choose a location and connect#

After signing in, choose an [available VPN location](/network) and tap Connect. For most users, the best first choice is a location that is geographically close or labeled as a good everyday option. Planned locations should not appear as usable destinations in the app.

Wait for the app to show that the VPN is connected before you rely on it. If the app says reconnecting or needs attention, treat the connection as not ready yet and avoid assuming protection is active.

  • Use available locations first.
  • Switch locations if a route feels slow or unreliable.
  • Check status again after changing Wi-Fi or mobile networks.

Use the status, not guesswork#

A VPN should make its state easy to understand. The useful states are connected, reconnecting, disconnected, or needs attention. Connected means the app believes the VPN tunnel is active. Reconnecting means it is trying to recover after a network change or interruption.

Disconnected and needs attention should be treated as clear signals to pause, reconnect, or troubleshoot. Do not assume that a VPN is protecting traffic just because the app is installed. The status is the source of truth.

If your app shows 'Needs attention', it usually means you need to grant VPN permission in your Android system settings or verify account sign-in.

Know what a VPN does not do#

A VPN helps protect the connection between your device and the selected VPN location. It is useful on shared networks and when you want browsing traffic routed through a private tunnel.

It does not make every online activity anonymous. Websites, apps, cookies, accounts, payment services, device fingerprints, and unsafe browsing choices can still identify you. Keep using strong passwords, two-factor authentication, software updates, and careful account habits.

Caution: A VPN secures your connection route but does not make you invisible to websites where you log in. Cookies, browser profiles, and active account sign-ins will still identify your session.

Make it part of a normal routine#

The best way to use a VPN is to make the check repeatable. Before using a shared network, open the app, connect to an available location, and confirm the connected state. After switching Wi-Fi networks, moving to mobile data, or restarting the device, check the status again.

If a website behaves differently while the VPN is connected, do not assume the VPN is broken. Some services react to changed public IP addresses or new locations. Try a nearby available location, refresh the site, or disconnect only if you are comfortable using that network without the VPN.

  • Check status before signing in to important accounts.
  • Use nearby available locations for normal browsing.
  • Use support if the same sign-in or permission issue repeats.
